04.06.2010 :: Academic Event :: Recital by Aiyun Huang

Students and faculty of the Arts Division at UCSC are invited to see the internationally acclaimed Taiwanese/Canadian percussionist Aiyun Huang present an extraordinary recital, featuring works of Roger Reynolds, Javier Alvarez, UCSC's Ben Carson, and others, including some of the most challenging and innovative solo music of the last three decades. The concert is centered around conceptual and exploratory uses of textual and theatrical elements in new music. Dr. Huang visits us from McGill University, where she is Chair of Percussion at the Schulich School of Music.

Dr. Huang's repertoire ranges from the complex and innovative approaches to rhythm and pulse, to conceptual work that attempts redefinitions of the roles of texts, narratives, and performing bodies in musical action. She has taken the Premier Prix Medal d'Or at the Conservatoire Rueil-Malmaison, and is one of only three percussionists to win the prestigious Geneva International Competition for performers, in its 60+ year history. Her recital will consist of canonical works (by Georges Aperghis, Roger Reynolds, Javier Alvarez, and Vinko Globokar), and a new work by UCSC's Ben Carson.

Please join us on Tuesday for this rare concert, presented by the Music Department and by Porter College. Admission is free for UCSC Arts Division students and faculty.
