Apr 13:: Wednesday Cinema Society: Now, Voyager

WEDNESDAY NIGHT CINEMA SOCIETY
Now, Voyager (Irving Rapper, 1942, USA)

In conjunction with WJT Mitchell’s upcoming campus talk “Seeing Madness,” (Monday April 18th, 7pm, DARC 108), we wil be screening Now, Voyager.

The title of this romantic melodrama film was taken from well-known American poet Walt Whitman's 1892 Leaves of Grass (from the section titled The Untold Want):

In this film, a psychiatrist (Claude Rains) treats a repressed client (Bette Davis),  transforming her into a modern, attractive, and glamorous woman as she fights to free herself from the tyrannical shackles of her domineering mother.

Now, Voyager was selected, in 2007, for preservation in the United States by the National Film Registry, deeming the film to be, "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
