prof. sharon daniel has a stunning fall

A series of new media documentaries by Sharon Daniel was presented in a solo exhibition titled CONVICTIONS, at the STUK Kunstencentrum in Leuven, Belgium, September - November 2013. Each of the works in CONVICTIONS examines various aspects of the criminal justice system through first hand testimony and evidence given by impacted individuals. STUK Kunstencentrum is a Belgian National Arts Center established to follow developments in international arts production by supporting the creation and presentation of innovative multi-disciplinary artworks and facilitating critical reflection and public engagement. The exhibition CONVICTIONS included; interactive installations of the online documentaries Public Secrets [http://publicsecret.net], Blood Sugar [http://bloodandsugar.net]; the premiere of two new video installations - Undoing Time: Pledge and Undoing Time: S.O.S.; and an installation of a new interactive documentary Inside the Distance, which was the result of a two-year research collaboration with the KULeuven Institute of Criminology, Suggonome Belgian National Mediation Services and STUK. The research collaboration was funded by the European agency OPAK with matching funds from the Dean's Arts Excellence Fund. The online version of Inside the Distance [http://insidethedistance.net] was launched in an exhibition at the 8th International Conference of the European Forum for Restorative Justice in Belfast, Northern Ireland in June 2014. Daniel was also recently an invited keynote speaker at the Transmedia Festival, El II Seminario Transmedia y Narrativas Audiovisuales, Cinemateca Distrital, Bogota, Columbia. That was October 16, 2014. Her most recent essay "On Politics and Aesthetics", originally published in Studies in Documentary Film (vol. 6, issue 2, 2013) was translated into spanish for a book that was published by the Cinemateca and released at the opening of the festival - "Sobre politica y estética en Public Secrets y Blood Sugar", in Artes Mediales/Convergencias y Technologías, Instituto Distrital de Las Artes/Cinemateca distrital-Gerencia de artes Audiovisuales del Idartes
