My thesis project concept is the experience of the ideal, and its contrast. The feature exhibit is a adult human sized virtual womb. It’s purpose is to experience a concentrated altered state which is measurable by brainwave activity which will correspond with peaceful calm alpha/early theta states, or at the opposite extreme, agitation. The intimate space will utilize light and sound to stimulat or calm
I have two ideas that could be used for my 201 paper topic,
When brain waves are altered for any reason there are risks, such as inducing epileptic seizures, or provoking a state of paranoia or worse a schizophrenic episode/relapse. There are commercial devices designed and marketed under a panacea of false claims (memory and learning). There are two categories of device, • physical apparatus - sunglasses that have a strobe in tandem with sound • virtual reality - which has the potential to push the user into a different state of mind with more intensity. This paper would explore these risks.
I am exploring the concept of the ideal from the vantage point of looking and being seen. Our own identity is aligned with our sense of the ideal. Exploring what is and is not our ideal, is another way of looking, discovering and understanding our own identity. This paper’s focus is to gather theoretical perspectives of contemporary artists whose work is similar.
