Title of project: Oficina de Batidas/Beat Garage

In the space below, please give a concise description of your project and its relationship of the project to your previous work and future goals. (Attach a maximum of 1-2 additional pages if needed.)

My proposed project evolved from my three passions: teaching technical filmmaking, discussing stereotypes in media, and Brazilian culture. I have been teaching courses in filmmaking for the past eight years at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts School of Filmmaking. My love affair with Brazilian culture began fourteen years ago in a capoeira class. My proposed project is a second step towards developing a long-term exchange between youth, educators, musicians, and filmmakers in Brazil, the United States and other similar communities worldwide.

Please give a concise calendar for completing your project including significant milestones and the quarter of your anticipated graduation:

Workshop Curriculum Development: present through June 2009

Social Networking Prototype: present through May 2010

Technical Training Workshops in Brazil: June – August 2009

Written Thesis: September 2009 – April 2010

Thesis Presentation: May 2010

Please give an itemized budget including all of the expenses and sources of support associated with presentation of your project (not just those requested here).

Notes on Budget The proposed budget listed below is based on an ideal funding scenario that will provide technical infrastructure support for the NGO Cinema Nosso in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. My current project is not dependent upon the funding of all items listed. I intend to develop a long-term relationship with Cinema Nosso and will continue to solicit funding for their technical infrastructure. My project is dependent on the travel and living expenses, Flip Cameras, Zoom H2 recorders, Hard Drives and DVD Stock. My GARG application requests $2,300 in funding for airfare to Brazil ($1,300) and $1,000 towards room and board in Rio de Janeiro to facilitate the workshops.

Flip Video cameras Eight at $135 ea $1,080

Please list any and all funds received in support of ANY ASPECT of this project from your department, from all other university grant proposals (include pending applications and mark as “pending”), and from any external (non-UCSC) source. Please document any pending or unsuccessful attempts to secure funding from other sources by attaching an annotated cover page from that grant application to your GARC application.

12 Terrabytes of Firewire Drive Data Storage has been requested through the Central/South American Seagate Technology representative for a total estimated at $2,580 (pending)

University of California Human Rights Fellowship in Social Documentation $4,000 for hardware (To be submitted by 2/26/09)

Florence French Grant request for $3,500 (To be submitted in Feb. 2009)

How will you use funds received from GARC?

The actual presentation of my thesis work will require limited, if any funds. In lieu of funds for presentation, I am requesting funding for travel and sustenance in Brazil to facilitate the media workshops. The student projects generated during these workshops will provide the content for the social networking site that I will continue to develop in my second year of studies in the DANM program. It is essential that this creative work be completed during July and August of 2009 in order to compile all of the elements of my thesis project in time for our senior exhibition in May 2010.
