The DANM program is a technology rich art program. Our research areas focus on a wide variety of technology and technology changes rapidly. A flexible and forward thinking mindset is required for us to have the technology at our disposal necessary for our research.
The DANM Technical Coordinator, Lyle Troxell, decides how to spend the technical budget to most effectively use the limited resources. If you need equipment for your DANM sponsored research please meet with Lyle and he will help you get what you need if it fits the general needs of the program. Here is what Lyle has to say about how he spends money on new equipment:
In the technical budget we have some standard yearly expenses and we have expenses on consumables, repairs, and lab maintenance. We also have some costs associated with staffing, but most interesting and challenging when it comes to spending the technical budget is what new technology to invest in.
I am always looking for the next big technical space that will be interesting to our researchers. As a faculty member your interestes guide my spending - so share with me what you are interested in researching. And as a Student, if you are interested in a piece of equipment, talk to me. If I think it has some more use then just your research then I will consider purchasing it for your use, and adding it to our equipment pool. If you have support from a faculty member regarding your interest, or if you have a written proposal that denotes that piece of equipment's need I am much more likely to invest in that gear. But I can't do any of this unless you speak with me.
