Fifth Week

We began today's class in DANM 210 talking about the schedule for the rest of this quarter. Next week, we don't have class. The next one, we are supposed to have our models ready and then it's time to present. The presentations are going to have to be under 20 minutes per person. Lindsay is going to bring her cards to wave for people when it's there time up.

We need to have our questions for our cluster group for each other. These five questions have to be from our cluster and answered. We were supposed to have our questions finalized today. It's for our benefit.

Also, the class was specifically about grants.

The question concerned the common proposal format requests a statement of the problem and is usually a presented at the beginning of the proposal guidelines. It's tricky. Sometimes, there is creative practice that is active social involvement or engagement for solving a problem. Sometimes, you're not. So you have to talk more about the grant furthering your investigation in a specific field such as; I've been working in this field for this many years, and this grant will help me continue investigating in a artistic pursuit.

Ed handed out a list of grants for our use. We talked specifically about the Creative CreativeCapitol. Sometimes a group, such as Creative Capitol, wants a specific font size. Follow all the instructions in the proposal guidelines like binding instructions. Leave time in your schedule for organizing your normal material for the particular grand.

This organization, the CreativeWorkFund ask for a letter of inquiry. They are rare group that will help fund the latter part of the process for the grant.

Through the University we have the OfficeofSponsoredProjects that has a database with search for our specific types of grants for us. I will talk with Felicia of possibly having the student power to go through the list of grants that come out of the searches. Also, Christina Waters is the video specialist and will help us with the review the lists of proposal.

When you query, look for innovation grants.

There is a possibility the University will help us with a non-profit status but that would have to have a background check of whether the University already has established relationships with the various grant funding.

We can look at our MFA program is equivalent to a two year residency.

Sometimes, if you can get a laugh out of your proposal it's good. It's possibly that it is at your peril depending upon the audience, grant jury board. Ed's been on many juries. Usually you can eliminate 2/3s of the applicants right away. Sometimes every grant application is well done and then every word can be analyzed. Stay away from jargon. Always make the proposal exactly how they request the format. Always use confident words such as "I will fulfill the intention", "definitive", "of extreme importance to humanity". Remember to state in the present.

Underline or bold information that you want to make sure is obvious to the jury.

If you get the funding, always keep the donor in the loop with the progress of your project.

Reasons for the equipment should be carefully written and clearly stated why the equipment with a solid case in the grant for non-experts. Lindsay was on the jury of GARC endowment last year. The average award is from $1000 to $1500.

Always research who has gotten money in the past. Also, sometimes there are questions for end of the process. This is useful in putting together the proposal and that you are planning the documentation of the process. TheCreativeWorkFundLeadArtistEvaluation

Ed spoke for a while about Geert Levink from last week's ATC colloquium. This led him to discussing Parc. We spent some time articulating our field.

Do not have a discourse such as what is media art in the middle of your proposal discourse. Remember applying for grants is entering into the world media arts discourse. Corporate equipment and art loan is possible but requires much patience with the corporations by going back many times with the requests.
