Getting Started
Welcome to the danm.ucsc.edu machine and to the DANM program. This server is used to support students, staff and faculty involved in the Digital Arts and New Media MFA Program. This page lists features and attempts to help you get aquanted with the server.
Getting an Account
DANM graduate students will get their accounts during orientation. Students enrolled in a DANM course who need server access need to email lyle from your UCSC address, request an account and CC the faculty member teaching the course. Include the following information:
- Your Name
- The Class your are taking
- Your UCSC ID (email at ucsc)
- Your Student ID
- Your phone number
- A URL that represents you (optional)
Lyle will send you back a welcome letter and further information.
User Name
Your user name on this machine your UCSC user name, which is the first part of your UCSC email address. Please keep in mind that this machine does not use the UCSC system's authentication so the passwords for this DANM account and your UCSC account can be different. It's up to you to manage them both. You can ask me (lyle) to change your password on danm.ucsc.edu which I will do as you specify. If you know your current password you can change it, simply follow the directions on the Change Password page.
Though it is difficult you can follow these User Name Change instructions.
File Sharing
You can connect to danm.ucsc.edu with Windows, Apple or SSH/SCP to access your personal space on the machine. This space is a Macintosh OS X home directory located at /User/your-user-name. Notes about this can be found at Upload Instructions.
Wiki - edit anything.
The danm.ucsc.edu is a wiki and as such you can easily edit pages. Simply login/signin and double click a page. This will bring up a web form with formatting instructions to the right. Take a look at the Technical Help page for links on using the DANMWiki.
Please be responsible as the content on this site is used by many including the public.
Courses Pages
Please note that participation on the courses pages is a great way to share thoughts, turn in homework, and enhance your in-class learning. Some faculty may be reluctant to update the course pages, go ahead and do it for them, and let them know you can help them out.
Web Space
Along with the wiki pages there are also personal web spaces that take html, css, images, php and other traditional file times. Each user gets one of these spaces and they are responsible for the content on their pages. The directory "Sites" in your user home directory is mapped to
http://danm.ucsc.edu/~username/
For example: my user name is 'lyle' so, using file sharing or scp I can put web content in my /User/lyle/Sites directory which is
http://danm.ucsc.edu/~lyle/
Non-DANM students/faculty will most likely not have a home directory set up. Your instructor can request this for you, if it is needed.
For help on using this web space please see Upload Instructions.
