My proposal is an interdisciplinary course of study working with youth in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to encourage the creation of personal narratives and web based educational media, as well as the collection of Brazilian pop culture media samples. My interest in media goes beyond academic analysis to the point of creating responses to negative representations using the same means of transmission. Ideally the media created by project participants will be distributed widely enough to present a challenge to the predominant negative stereotypes presented by mainstream media channels.
Empower youth in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with access to and training in new forms of digital media.
Develop a curriculum and technological workflow from concept to distribution that is accessible, financially feasible, sustainable, and easily taught by youth to other youth.
Encourage project participants to create narratives that contradict negative stereotypes of youth in Brazil.
6-7 months of planning and grant application

We conducted a four day Final Cut Pro workshop for youth at Cinema Nosso in July 2008. The workshop was co-facilitated by Drew Detweiler and Angela Maciel Detweiler who translated the instruction into Portuguese. Workshop participants came with varying degrees of prior experience ranging from Final Cut Pro editors to first time computer users. We used simple narrative footage shot on cellphones from a previous workshop as our practice footage.
