Alex’ 210 Project Critique

I found Alex’ proposal of a fan-fiction movie clip compilation of a popular Eastern European director’s films to be interesting, and have the potential to engage viewers beyond the director’s fans. To take the idea beyond the standard movie trailer, though, I think timing in the editing will be crucial. Also establishing some type of relationship between clips, or some type of creative narrative related to the director’s style, would give the work more appeal to a broader audience. The strategic use of music or sound bytes from the films could also enhance such a relationship, to comment on the director’s view of the world through his body of work. Alex mentioned that the director hates Hollywood. Perhaps actually inserting Hollywood style film clips into the montage to show contrast, and make this point, would be interesting too.

Karl’ 210 Project Critique

Karl’s Liebesraum project focusing on a single year in American history had a lot of interesting aspects. I liked the idea of immersing the interactor in a single year like 1985, with the optimism of the time and the undercurrent of the cold war tension, and then contrasting that experience with more current events. I also liked the idea that the interactor’s movement changed the video to move forward and backward slightly in time. The 3D image of the space makes it easy to envision the project. I do think that multiple video projections or LCD screens playing different complementary or contrasting video footage will make the work more engaging and immersive. Playing the digital video through code algorithms would also facilitate a more unique experience each time the interactor moves by building in random functions for retrieving specifically categorized video. That way Karl might plan that some cold war footage would be played at the same time as a music video, but he wouldn’t know which specific footage. This would create a more open interactive experience that allows for improvisation in each performance.
