Synthia Payne embarks upon a world tour of live concerts, presentations, workshops, and recording of improvised musical compositions via the Internet. The music will be created through collaborations where participants improvise music simultaneously with others at a distance. Tour dates will be announced as they are scheduled and will be open to public observation and participation.
To kick off the tour, on June 8, 2007, at the DANM Graduate Exhibition there will be two computer stations and instruments so that people can go online and try improvising music with other people on line in other locations. Audio and video recordings from previous CYBERJAMMER events will also be on public display.
An early reference to simultaneous multi-user, multi-location communications via technology comes from Allan Kaprow’s 1968 video entitled, Hello Hello, in which people in various television studios could see and speak to one another via television monitors. The CYBERJAMMER events create an opportunity for cross-cultural communications that can be related to Christian Marclay's 1996 "Swiss Mix", where he directed a musical improvisation between nearly 200 players he assembled in a train depot in Switzerland. Many diverse cultures were playing music together, possibly for the first time ever.
Electronic music pioneer Pauline Oliveros and her Deep Listening practice is at the foundation of Synthia’s work. The idea behind Oliveros’ Deep Listening practice is to explore the relationships among any and all sounds, and how they connect with our inner and outer selves. Synthia has found that through the spirit of play and collaboration found in online music improvisation there is the potential for postive cross-cultural communications and greater understanding among people.
A graduate of UC Santa Cruz’ premiere interdisciplinary Master of Fine Arts program: DANM (Digital Arts New Media) Payne is utilizing her training and experience in electronic music and digital media art to focus on the art of telematic music improvisation in public performances where she plays synthesizers and uses her voice to trigger synthesizers. Synthia holds a BA in Film and Digital Media and Electronic Music 2005, and a Master of Fine Arts in Digital Arts New Media 2007, both from UC Santa Cruz.
