First create one 100x100-pixel headshot to represent yourself and another 100x100-pixel icon to represent your project. These should be .jpg or .png. You'll use these thumbnails shortly.
Visit the Pool
Walkthrough and aquaint yourself with the process of navigating, reviewing, and adding to The Pool.
Point Firefox 3+ or IE7+ at the
Pool home, register if necessary, and log in using the formula lastnamefirstname0X. (You may have to check on "compatibility mode" if you're using IE8.) If you had an account in the past, don't register for a new one--click on the "forgot my email" link on the Pool home page, or email Pool Interface on First Class if that doesn't help.
If you didn't get an email to the contrary, the last digit of your login is 1, as in gonzalezmary01. If you don't remember using a different password in the past, it's probably swimmer.
Once logged in, navigate to the Pool of your choice via the link at upper right and click on the My Account button in the Options menu at the top. (The class will be adding intents to the Art Pool, but you can add the initial reviews wherever you like.) If you haven't already, fill out the fields in the account tab as instructed in the Walkthrough, including your self-ratings. Upload the thumbnail icon you prepared of yourself, and click Update Account Settings.
Find projects
Filter the Pool by clicking on the Add criterion button in the upper left of the Options menu, then choose any subjects that interest you. Then review 6 projects by students in other classes. You can filter by additional subject criteria to narrow the selection, or click on the Advanced graphing button in the Options menu to expand the scope beyond the last 200 projects. Try to pick projects that don't already have many reviews (they will be floating on the left side of the Pool interface).
Once you've clicked on a floating title to open its Project Panel, make sure to select the latest version by clicking on the little box at the bottom of the version stream at left.
Once you've read the intent or viewed the approach or release, click on + Review and follow the guidelines in the
Walkthrough.
Filter the Pool by selecting UCSC as subject, then review 6 projects by other students in your class using the process described above.
Then filter by the subject capstone-2010 (and/or any other subjects provided by your instructor) and review 6 projects by students in other classes. Be sure to chose the latest version to review.
John Bell of the University of Maine will videochat with the class to assist with any problems students may have encountered and to demo more advanced Pool features.
Click on the Art Pool's Add to Pool button and following the instructions in the Walkthrough on adding an intent. Title your project something catchier than "Class Intent" or "Dave's Project." You can use your abstract for the description. Make sure you add the subject corresponding to your university or class, such as UCSC, or your new reviewers won't find you!
Having added your intent already, open its project panel by clicking on its floating title, select the intent (the little box at left), and add an approach. Paste the url for your approach in the Approach url field. Add your thumbnail for the project. (See the Walkthrough or Pool FAQ for more on adding approaches.)
Filter the Pool by selecting UCSC as subject, then review 6 approaches by other students in your class.
Then filter by the subject capstone-2010 (and/or any other subjects provided by your instructor) and review 6 different approaches by students in other classes. Be sure to chose the latest version to review.
Post any questions about the process to pool DOT interface AT umit.maine.edu. Good luck!
