B. LEA COX

My work addresses themes at the interface of art and natural science in the media of sound, video, photography, and painting. My most recent focus is the boundary between the human world and birds. I design site-specific audio tours that are both educational and entertaining ways to explore and bring awareness of the natural world. I use web design to link the live and virtual worlds, and have developed sound compositions based on bird songs.

Prior to my entrance into the Digital Arts and New Media MFA program at U.C. Santa Cruz, I worked as a scientist (geologist, geo-microbiologist, astrobiologist) and have a Ph.D in Soil Science from U.C. Berkeley, where I studied the interactions of bacteria and mineral surfaces. I began painting in 1980 and have sold many of my paintings.

"Is there a more mysterious idea for an artist than to imagine how nature is reflected in the eyes of an animal? How does a horse see the world, how does an eagle, a doe, or a dog? It is a poverty-stricken convention to place animals into landscapes as seen by men; instead, we should contemplate the soul of the animal to divine its way of sight." (Franz Marc)
