Lea Cox

Ph.D. Soil Science,U.C. Berkeley, B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geology.

Work Experience: field geology (geothermal exploration), computer modeling (computer simulations of heat and fluid flow in fractured rocks), geomicrobiology (studying the interaction of bacteria and metals on mineral surfaces), and Astrobiology (in NASA's Mars program at Jet Propulsion Lab where I worked with magnetotactic bacteria).

Art/Science: In all of my work as a scientist(science background), I always enjoyed the visual aspects: microscopic thin sections of rocks and minerals, rock outcroppings, soil horizons, and electron micrographs of bacteria. While employed as a scientist, during my free time, I painted landscapes, animals, and abstracts, working primarily in watercolor and acrylics on paper. My personal website shows some of my artwork. http://www.lea-art.com

My desire to combine science and art led me to DANM. My biggest challenge is to push my artistic explorations and not be controlled by my training as a scientist. I am really excited about being surrounded by so many creative people.
