Advice for New Teaching Assistants
- Learn the Names of the Students (take a digital photo)
- Follow the instructions of the Professor who has hired you (if you care about recommendations and working for them again!!)
- When it comes time to grade, make a list of criteria and assign points; refer to this as you grade each paper, exam, drawing, etc.
- Set a chunk of time to grade (like a whole day or 2 days) as soon as you can upon receiving the papers, exams, etc.)
- Try to grade all of the papers on the same day, or 2 days in a row. I find that you need to see them all within a similar timeframe because your "mood" may change; as you grade you may revise your opinions of earlier work that you have already graded.
- If you are grading artwork, put all the work into 3 piles first, based on your initial impression -- good, average, below average
- Look at the TA as a great opportunity to learn and to practice your communication and education skills, as well as to learn new material.
- Keep track of your time, and if you are putting in more than 20h/week, find a way to cut back. Your first priority is to get through the DANM graduate program!!
I found this link on Margaretha Haughwout's wiki page -- it is very inspirational:
