Office hours starting week of 10/2: to be announced.
Class Objective: Designing for the theater or film is a uniquely collaborative process. Each designer – no matter which discipline – must know how to read and analyze a script and how to work with directors, fellow designers and the technical staff so as to create a fruitful, invigorating presentation of the script onstage or on the screen. All designers must support not only the work of the writer but also that of the actors. All of this must be done within a strict timetable and budget. We will discuss all of this as well as cover methods of starting one’s own creative process and various ways to communicate one’s ideas visually.
Structure: The class is structured as a series of lectures – it is your responsibility to take notes to prepare for exams. Your assignments will range from the written - script breakdown/analysis, concept description and play production critique – to visual projects exploring lighting, costumes and scenery. We will all look at the latter in class. A final project will bring all of these elements together. You will keep a “ visual workbook “ which I will check at unspecified times throughout the quarter. You will produce a written script breakdown, as well as 2 short papers.
There will be a mid-term and final exam.
