Breeze Olsson: THE VIDEO INSTALLATION PROPOSAL (10/11/2006)
Please prepare a proposal of 1 1/2 to 3 pages or so describing a video installation you want to create: list materials you will employ, provide an layout or diagram and also describe the installation, including what it looks like, how it works spatially and temporally and what the role of the visitor is. Tell us what kind of installation it is: e.g. site specific? Interactive? Surveillance? a relief or sculpture, Etc. etc. What issues are you addressing in the piece? What "subjective experiment" or learning with the body and visual/aural/kinaesthetic perception do you want to occur?
Basic Idea: An interactive installation placed in a gallery-style setting. Two different audience experiences: 1st person (immersed) and 3rd person (viewing the viewer) 1st person experiences an upclose and personal viewing of acrobatic skills filmed and performed by using 3 headcams. Projection screens show each camera in “surround” experience. 3rd person audience sees bird’s eye view of acrobatic skills being performed as well as the viewer’s superimposed face onto a closeup shot of the acrobat performing. Sound sampled in from acrobat performance adds another level of realism to the 1st person viewer experience.
Materials: 3 projection screens for 1st person monitor 3 monitors for 3rd person viewers (center shows 1st person superimposed image of performance while left and right monitors show the “bird’s eye” view of the acrobatic performance. Surround sound speakers linked to video feed. Video camera (realtime video of 1st person’s face) Blue screen Computer for realtime video composit and 3rd person bird’s eye view Computer to show 3x 1st person views Software/hardware video sink (1st and 3rd persons) Security bar, comfy chair and some airline sickness bags
Role of the visitor: Visitors are expected to simply enjoy themselves! Experience something out of their ordinary lives. “Movers” get to try a different sport (or a different perspective of their own) and less-moble-folk … well, maybe this will serve as motivation to get out more often! ;)
Visual Perception: 3rd person viewer sees the acrobat within all of us regardless of preconceived idea of a person’s physical ability (or lack thereof). 1st person is immersed into the athletic perspective of a world-class athlete. He/she receives a glimpse of what it is like to perform acrobatic skills at a level that would normally take years of arduous training to achieve.
