The Work of Culture in the Age of Cybernetic Systems

I have a question about the example he uses on p. 134 of Regans SDI crap. He says "Regan's simulated warfare would turn the electromagnetic force fields of fifties science-fiction films that shielded monsters and creatures from the arsenal of human destructive power into ploughshares beyond the ozone." What is he talking about? I know Star Wars was a completely wacky idea with little base in reality but I'm not sure about the ploghshares part. Anyone care to expound? And what does it mean that the enemies are imaginary in a Lacanian sense?-nici
