Deliverables

Proposal – proposal guidelines – theoretical premise and practical description, images and diagrams, extensive bibliography which includes theoretical texts, historical references, and related project examples.

Full project specification – should include – what techniques and technologies will be employed/invented – procedural approach, user testing, etc.

Full project development timeline

Two Grant applications – actual applications to granting agencies – identify relevant sources and write a proposal to each based on their guidelines and objectives

One Exhibition/distribution proposal – where/how to make your project public – identify a target venue that accepts solitications/proposals and write a proposal designed for the venue

One prototype – the prototype may be realized at a different “scale” or in a different media/modality than the actual project proposed. For example, a software project might be prototyped in the form of a performance or a game played in “real” space/time as opposed to virtual space/time – a theatre project might be prototyped in a multi-user virtual environment like ‘habbo hotel’ http://www.habbohotel.co.uk/ - the premise of a community-based project might be modeled in interaction with a group of fellow students… OR the prototype might be realized in the same media/modality as the project as a preliminary proof of concept or miniature. For example, a life-size interactive, robotic sculpture might be mocked up with in Lego or with mechanical toys – a software project might be represented with mock-up screen shots and “alpha” versions of basic code…

Approaches

Research/critique clusters - students will be assigned to clusters based on shared interests – like a reading group – for joint research into past examples and techniques as well as concept – theoretical readings

Individual meetings and Directed readings – discussion and review of progress and assignment of individual readings on topics relevant to each student’s project proposal for development of project bibliography

Group critiques of proposal and prototype development in-progress

Technical Workshops – basic introduction to technologies and techniques of relevance to proposed projects and review of technologies addressed in DANM programming and electronics workshops in the winter and spring quarters – guidance on selection of workshop registration
