GRADING Pass/fail for graduate ; letter grade for undergraduate, plus written evaluation at the end of the quarter. Grades reflect attendance and participation, writing consistency, editing, revision and presentation. Required: first, a concise project brief of no more than 1000 words, using the questions developed by Creative Capital (see below), due by October 23; and second, amplification of the abstract brief as a white paper on your thesis project by December 11.
SCHEDULE WEEK ONE September 25: group discussion of individual processes, themes, hopes, desires and concerns related to the thesis work. Selected readings tailored to each individual, as assigned.. WEEK TWO October 2 introduction of principles of proposal writing using Creative Capital Foundation letter of inquiry questions. For DANM 202, this brief will be called the ‘abstract brief.” Assignment: draft of abstract brief, due October 9 through 23 for vetting/revisions/critique and presentation. Abstract brief questions: Please describe your project in one sentence. (50 words) Tell us about your project. (300 words) What final form(s) will your project take? (100 words) Place your work in context so that we may better evaluate it. (150 words) How does your project take an original approach to content and form? Be as specific as possible. (100 words) What kind of impact, aesthetic, intellectual, communal, civic and/or socialdo you hope your project will have? (100 words) How might your proposed project act as a catalyst for your artistic and professional growth? (100 words) Who are the audiences for your work and how do you hope to reach them? (100 words) What are appropriate venues for your work? (100 words)

WEEK FIVE October 23: No class. meeting. All second drafts of of abstract briefs due via email to cmcphee at ucsc.edu. I will edit and return with comments and suggested revisions, edits. These final drafts will serve as your proposal abstract to your thesis advisor(s).
WEEK SIX October 29 (Wednesday) : visiting ATC / DANM artist Hassan Elahi ATC lecture Studio C, FDM Department, 4 to 6 pm.
October 30 guest artist/curator for DANM 202 : Raul Moarquech Ferrera-Balanquet Raul will present his curatorial project as social documentary/ cultural production, InteractivA Biennial of New Media Art. Raul’s presentation is open to all DANM graduate students and faculty, as well as film and digital media students. Reception following, possibly dinner (if coordinated with 2nd year DANM cohort meeting).
With Raul and the group, seminar special topic presentation and discussion on the new media wiki archive, in the context of net based publishing; (suggestion) critique in re “Processual Editing (Paper and Pixel) at Documenta 12 /Lab for Culture 2007 and work by Walid Raad and Atlas Group Laila Sakr. 750 word paper due.
All, final revised abstract briefs due in writing (hard copy) as well as online on DANM wiki and via email to cmcphee at ucsc.edu
November 6 special topic presentation and discussion on (suggestion) P2P as utopia; social networking and the collaborative interview., critique in re Michael Bauman/Markus Miessen articles, 750 word paper due, Josh McVeigh? Schultz.
November 12: guest ATC Artist lecture by Jordan Crandall Studio C FDM Department, 4 - 6 pm.
November 13: guest artist/theorist for DANM 202 and ATC , Jordan Crandall Special group seminar discussion and critique with Jordan, emphasis on critical theory and contemporary media strategies for the representation of trauma and violence. Attendance required. Report on George Nelson and ‘design /violence” by Juan Bayardo 750 word paper due.
November 20 Special topic presentation on (suggestion) semiotics of VJ ‘d networked performance; critique of Mark Davis/Christian Metz plus one other writer TBA, Craig.Hobbs. 750 word paper due. plus work in progress (infrared reactive interface design)
November 27 Thanksgiving
December 4 Presentation of animation film work in progress., Juan. Bayardo. Presentation of GUI interface media wiki work in progress, Laila Sakr Presentation of software development (java/actionscripting) ,work in progress, Josh McVeigh?-Schultz. Farewells, conclusions and beginnings: last seminar meeting.
December 11: thesis project white papers due,  consisting of abstract brief (1000) words, and discussion (with sections on 1/content and form approach in concrete terms, in detail, outlining process and direction with specifics in re code /access/graphic design strategies/animation technicalities/ augmented reality interface design, as per your project area; (500 words) 2/work plan including timeline, budget if relevant, external academic paper or festival exhibition submission plans (350 words) ; 3/critical argument developed in triangulation to a pairing of apparent antagonists, including, but not limited to, industrial design vs killing machines; archive vs remix; etc (750 words, is a revision of the essay you have already offered earlier this month for seminar presentation) . 4/annotated bibliography.. Document formatting and syntax should follow Chicago Manual of Style. Post to DANM wiki and via email to cmcphee (at) ucsc.edu by 9 pm. Word counts approximate, (best to be concise, please don’t go over).
