Building an argument; understanding and writing to audience; developing a research plan; communicating related qualitative research in context of your art project; developing a working annotated bibliography; learning to write your own prompts; learning to organize your thinking around key concepts in logical sequences; learning collaborative nonviolent critique styles; overcoming passivity, inertia and fear through a series of steps. Production goal : thesis research paper/ research plan draft 5,000 words by mid November; sample chapter in depth-essay on theory or methodology, 1500 words.
The first part of the seminar (weeks 1 to 5) we will be focussing on a series of methods and mechanics exercises, and related intensive short writing assignments. The second part (weeks 4 to 9) will be a seminar consisting of student presentations and group critique via essay form with visual and audio text. Group critique and collaboration exercises will be conducted by means of a Socratic method (dilalectic); together with a Bauhaus ethic, meaning to generate new ideas from fundamental or primary concepts.
Pass/Fail based on 6 writing assignments plus participation in seminar. Late papers not accepted past extensions of 1 week (except for emergency, personal/family crisis) . Pass (minimal) requires at least 4 of 6 assignments completed, i. e. ‘fail ‘ will occur if you turn in 3 papers or fewer, or if chronically late.
