Students will engage in dialogues at the intersection of theory and practice with the goal of producing a pre-thesis proposal and essay. Readings and seminar discussions will inform the development of project proposals and essays, which theoretically contextualize students’ work.

This course is the third core seminar in the DA/NM curriculum. The readings, presentations and seminar discussions are intended to inform your practice and begin your preparation for your thesis. You will be required to be actively involved, through dialogue and praxis (as defined by several strains of Marxism, ie. political practices informed by reflection) in an examination of the ‘interface’ as boundary or bridge between art and life. The course requirements are designed to help you,

1) identify and articulate your goals as an artist, 2) develop a focus for your thesis project and 3) theoretically contextualize your proposed project through a short paper which may serve as a preliminary draft of your thesis paper.

criteria for evaluation:

a) attendance and participation

b) completion of assigned project “exercises”

c) on-time completion of drafts of work-in-progress

d) proof of concept project proposal including design specifications and docs

e) essay which theoretically contextualizes the proposed project

f) online “synthesis” of paper and proposal

g) final class presentation of “f”
