Class Meets – C102, Tuesday and Thursday 10:00-11:45
Course Objective The focus of this class will be the advanced exploration of projected light in performance. Technology covered will range from the shadow made by a bare light bulb, to the latest in automated lighting and projection gear and techniques. The history of lighting as art, and the esteemed artists of the medium will be covered, and there will be many hands on projects designed to demystify the process.

Evaluation 15% Attendance and Participation 10% Projection surface integration 10% Cornell project 10% Designer paper and oral presentation 10% Music Video 10% Photo recreation 10% Non Theatrical lighting project 10% Site-specific design 15% Final
Attendance Your attending class and punctual arrival will be crucial to successfully completing the class – However it is also expected that everyone will participate in class discussions. Sitting quietly in the back will not get you through in this class. Your evaluation will state “Poor attendance” after 2 class absences.
Project due dates Late assignments will not be accepted, and repeated absences or lateness will result in grade reduction. Also, any Plagiarism or cheating will be reported to the University, and will result in course failure.
Projection surface integration
Create a unique surface for rear projection.
Cornell box
Build a box in the style of Cornell that incorporates lighting.
Designer paper and oral presentation
Write a 700 word minimum paper on a Lighting Designer or artist who used lighting in a unique way. Background, style etc.
Music Video
Create a presentation set to music using a song and program of your choosing such as Power Point?, Keynote, Director, etc.
Photo lighting dissection and recreation
Find a photo with interesting lighting and more then 2 sources. Dissect what you believe the sources to be and recreate it in the light lab.
Site Specific design
Find a dark location you like within walking distance of C102. Transform it into something other then it is. i.e.- Turn the fly loft into a nuclear submarine catwalk.
Non-Theatrical lighting Project
Light a scene (or a moment) of your choosing using only non-theatrical lighting sources. Consider incorporating video, scrim, color, etc.
Final Project
The final week of class will be set aside for Final projects, these will incorporate large-scale projections, conventional and automated lighting. This will be presented in found exterior locations, so class will meet in the evenings this week (we will come up with a schedule in class). It should be the culmination of all the techniques studied in this class, and be at a level commensurate with Graduate studies. Guest may be invited. DANM 227 Projected Light in Performance & Art.
