My latest Digital Art projects:
04.22.2008:: I'll be involved in some upcoming performances in Santa Cruz--a list follows.
First is a new manifestation of Moving & Storage Performance Company/Crash, Burn & Die Dance Company:
The Flaming Puppet Sisters, directed by Therese Adams, will be performing on May 1st at 5:30PM to kick off National Dance Week. The performance is on an outdoor stage at Cathcart and Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz. The Flaming Puppet sisters are opening the festival and go on at 5:30 with one short comic piece performed by Saki, Sara Wilbourne, Neta, Darryl Ferrucci, Caitlin Deck, Betty Steinmetz with a special performance by Gabriel Adams-Sherrod. Don't miss it!
There will be numerous performances by various groups in downtown Santa Cruz
on that & subsequent days--all for free. For more information about the
festival go to

Also, I will be performing in two concerts of West Javanese gamelan music at the UCSC Recital Hall. April 29 & May 10, both at 7:30. We have the honor of presenting the debut of a new piece by the eminent Sundanese composer Nano S. Unfortunately, I don't currently know the price or program of the two concerts. But they'll both probably be pretty good, especially if you like dramatic drumming, and music made by hitting metal with hammers.

1 - An altered photo I call "DANM Mission Statement"

I FIND THIS FUNNY. At first glance, it presents the "lowest form of humor", the PUN. A second look reveals a depiction of DANM's new 2-pronged "Praxis" approach. Note that "Division of the Arts" (referring here to analysis & theory) and "Synthesis of the Arts" (practice, with a multidisciplinary emphasis) appear to reside in opposite directions. Of course, it need not always be this way. But we have an interesting challenge in providing for the coexistence of two very different mental modes; the synthetic, spatial-auditory-kinetic-haptic-etc. processing involved in much art practice, and the analytic/theoretical approach, with its emphasis on separation and distinction.
Certainly, the two modes partake of each other's attributes; good theoretical writing will synthesize previous work and current observations in a novel and useful way, and the actual craft of making things involves forming myriad distinctions both coarse & fine, in the material & aesthetic realms. In the interest of strengthening our emphasis on praxis, perhaps DANM should offer a course in "Corpus Callosum Calisthenics".

2 - The DANM T-shirt

A straightforward identity label, with a play on phonetic/orthographic/naughty connotations of our acronym. Would anyone like a shirt like this? If so, I think we should order a bunch of them. You can buy one right now in several different colors, at cost, at my
CafePress store, which I set up on a lark. But they are expensive. We would do better having our own printed up locally. We can order them in whatever colors we want. Shall we order up a few dozen of these? We could even give them to some of our featured guests at the DANM festival, as party favors.
Elena suggested a variant, the very amusing "DANM PROFESSOR". In gratitude for this, I have included a special item for Elena & Ed's family at the store.
Recent show: "SHOT UP"
A sculptural installation Exhibited March 3-30, 2006 at The Attic, 913 Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz.

As far as I can tell, this project has nothing to do with either Digital Arts or New Media.
If anyone thinks it does, please let me know.Cynthia made some interesting correlations between this work and the
punched cards of early computing; memory encoded in holes.
This seems very pertinent to the mythological associations of the project.
