Digital Arts and New Media MFA Candidate
Participatory Culture
I am an interdisciplinary artist, activist, and educator. My primary medium is digital video although my earlier work included assemblage, stage design, performance art, electronic music, and DJing. I come to DANM after eight years serving as the Head of Post Production at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts
School of Filmmaking where I taught non-linear editing and courses on stereotypes in film. Prior to teaching, I was an independent video producer seeking alternatives to talking heads by incorporating
Theater of the Oppressed techniques into social documentary work that addressed issues of violence towards women and racism. My most recent collaborative
video work is on display at the Museum of the African Diaspora,
MOAD, in San Francisco. I am currently developing a project with two NGOs,
Instituto Dois Irmãos and
Cinema Nosso, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where I intend to assist them in their efforts to provide youth with opportunities to create personal narratives. Ideally this work will expand to include other NGOs in Brazil, as well as web based exchanges with similar communities worldwide.
