Background

Let me give you some background on what I bring to the position of program manager.

In 1977 I established Moving Parts Press (www.movingpartspress.com) and began life as a printer, a literary and fine arts publisher, and a book artist, with a strong interest in education. A year later I graduated from UCSC in book arts. From 1984-1999 I was an annual lecturer in book arts, first for the Art Dept. and later for Porter College. My classes met in my studio and we worked collaboratively with art and writing faculty from all over campus. Some of my student projects are still hanging on the walls in the Porter offices.

About 13 years ago I gave up a combination of teaching, publishing, and commission work to become the director of the graphic design program at UCSC Extension while maintaining my studio work at Moving Parts Press. I have always been interested in the big picture. As a part time lecturer for Porter and UCSC Extension I never quite knew where my students were coming from or where they would go after they left me. I jumped at the chance to work directly with students and instructors to maintain and grow an excellent program with a strong reputation throughout the Bay Area design community. During this time I created the book, CODEX ESPANGLIENSIS, for which Jennifer Gonzalez, one of our DANM faculty, kindly wrote the introduction.

In the 30 years since I launched Moving Parts Press, I have gone from working exclusively with handset type to incorporating digital technology into the letterpress printing process. Currently I am in the final stages of completing a bilingual book of contemporary French poetry set digitally and accompanied by line drawings my father finished right before his death four years ago. I'm looking forward to my next project and wondering how my fascination with digital technology will inform the work.

I am very excited about being a part of this brave new world of digital art and new media. I am looking forward to growing together both personally and professionally in an environment of innovation and creativity. It is a pleasure to be here in Porter D-121 next to the famous koi pond.
