Disclaimer
In learning that these presentations will be filmed and posted on the internet I would like to start by noting that I am aware of the irony of the presentation I am about to give. I would also like to note that I am prepared to receive this video in my mail box at any time.
Recap
I am interested in the reaction of individuals to seeing their publicly posted online content out of context.
Last time I demonstrated this by finding information about you online and putting it up for display in front of the class.
Please consider these questions while hearing my prototype proposal:
- Did you have reactions to seeing your photos/information in class?
- What ways did you want to respond?
- Do you feel like you could have responded by commenting in a text based manner?
- Would you have?
- If no, think about ways I could encourage people to respond. ie, what would it take for you to respond?
3 Steps of my project
1) Mail Art
2) Gallery Interventions/Showings
3) Organization/Group discourse
The goal of each of these steps is to put people face to face with themselves as they are depicted online. I want to understand the reactions of participants and explore the mixing of public and private online. I am also interested in recieving documented reactions from people involved.
Prototype
See-Through Envelope Project

BASICS
STEP 1.
- I find you online
- I print your info
- I send it to you
at the address I find online
- It is sent in a see-through envelope
STEP 2.
- you open envelope
- you wonder what is going on
- you read the note inside
- you are directed to a website
STEP 3
- you (hopfully) go to the website
- you learn more about the project
- you respond and give feedback
SPECIFICS
Who I will be targeting for my prototype:
UCSC faculty and staff, starting with those who have
sitesup already
Reasons:
- Close
- allows for multiple avenues of discourse
- I can listen to find out if there is anyone asking about it
- Addresses
- worst case sinerio - boxes
WEBSITE
This will serve as an active part of the website. It will be a slideshow of all of the pictures or other information that I have sent to you. The website will also have a comments section and a directed questions section. It will also have instructions for how to remove photos and information you do not want online.
Goals for prototype:
- Send out 50 clear envelopes
- Have website up with a comments receiver, sized photos, and photos with their references avaliable.
Thats the plan.
Questions to think about....
- Did you have reactions to seeing your photos/information in class?
- What ways did you want to respond?
- Do you feel like you could have responded by commenting in a text based manner?
- Would you have?
- If no, think about ways I could encourage people to respond. ie, what would it take for you to respond?
What types of questions would be you answer?
Would you open a transparent envelope?
Any other thoughts?
