notes on will's proposal (this will download to your computer)
do you understand what the project is about from reading the proposal?
strengths
- laser project seemed well articulated both in the explanation of the project but also the technology needed
- misuse and abuse of technology very prevalent from example given in project two
weaknesses
- in sub project three, how are the “gems” of contemporary literature going to be chosen? what is their criteria?
- how is sub project three going to be carried out, what is the medium?
- what is the purpose of the opening in your proposal/can you draw more connections between the high IQ moron and the consumer society as a whole?
is the narrative of the project clear
- i thought the narrative was clear to the point of showing examples of how the misuse and abuse of technology can/will take place in this project.
- is there any significance to having three separate areas that you are exploring?
has the author given you a sense of how he/she came to this concept?
- would like more background on how this project came to be.
- what kind of historical context are you looking at?
has he/she positioned or contextualized it in relation to the concerns it addresses? in relation to other “works” (of any type) that address similar concerns?
- unsure if there are any other concerns besides pointing out the misuse and abuse of technology
- other works were cited as examples, but only in the context of having them inform where the project was headed
do you understand who the audience is
- even though intended audience is comprised of consumer connoisseurs, can other people benefit/ see the absurdity that you have intended or does the audience have to be so strictly defined. (i took the target audience to consist of upper middle class wasps)
can you answer the questions of “why”
can you say why the artist has proposed the project
- are there any other issues or ideas that you came up with to help you explore and exam the use, misuse and abuse of technology
- i am slightly unsure of the exact “why” of this project besides pointing out the absurdity in today’s consumer culture
can you say. based on the proposal, why the project is of value to its audience or why and audience would appreciate or participate in this project
- audience participation meant to be minimal
- value comes from showing how three different areas of consumer culture can be taken to the extreme
can you tell from the proposal how the artist plans to implement the project? what technologies will be used and/or developed?
- technologies seemed well developed in laser project
- implementation of the third sub project was unclear. was it a video, sound, motion, bumper sticker?
- second sub project relied on video, are there only going to be one instance or several.
description of project
- so. i think in your proposal you said that you wanted to explore the idea of misuse and abuse of technology is such a way as the show the audience (consisting of wasps – in my opinion) the absurdity of our consumer culture. you were going to do this by have an installation project that consists of three separate installations that is housed in a gallery. the first sub project is done by allowing people to “see” and experience music. this is done by mounting lasers onto mirrors on speakers to project the vibrations of the music. the second sub project consists of a video installation that show people talking in a room but only using internet communication and webcams. the third sub project is providing people with access to the “gems” of contemporary literature. (although i’m not quite sure how this is going to happen. but i could just be dumb and not understand which is probably the case here).
