Narrative Biography -- 500 words version.

Lyes Belhocine is a traveler and a jack-of-all-trades. Given his curiosity and taste for adventure, it wouldn't be wrong to say that at some point in his life, he got lost and luckily found arts. Electronic music composition brought him to make different experiences such as live performances, building a website, shooting videos and be the executive producer of an album. Captivated with expanding the horizons of the audio-visual domain using a new range of interactions between humans and computers, he enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree in Interactive Media at Université du Québec À Montréal, Canada. The seemingly endless artistic, educational, and recreational possibilities of interactive multimedia fueled his motivation to expand his knowledge in this area and he enrolled in the Digital Arts and New Media MFA Program in University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) to pursue this goal.

During the three years he spent at college in Montreal, Lyes gathered working teams to develop not less than 15 interactive projects, ranging from basic flash/actionscript applications to complex multi-software (max/msp/jitter, processing, quartz composer and more) interactive installations. His projects often reflected a vivid interest for different cultures and finding common issues to people, whether they come from America, Asia or Africa. All this time spent in production developed his critique eye over the design, content and strategies used in these projects. This brought him to ask himself many questions - related to content within installations, human perception of stimuli and interface design- as he started his MFA.

As extra-scholar activities, Lyes often got involved in various projects: he hosted a radio show aiming at making listeners discover hip-hop music from all around the world; he was involved in presenting his former university's Interactive Media program (DONNE DES DETAILS SUR COMMENT); he gathered a team of friends and colleagues with whom he built a project that earned the 10.000$-first-prize for writing a very complete design document for an interactive tool which purpose was to explain genomic to high-school students.

By the end of his Bachelor's degree, Lyes was an intern in a prestigious Montreal-based architecture company that was dealing with clients all around the world and offered interactive installations as a component of their designs. This experience allowed him to work with rather new and quite rare technologies and put him face to face with the fact that most people do not know what Interactive/Digital Media/Arts are, and that the biggest part in his work would be to be able to reach these people. This is when all the critique based on past projects came out as he started his MFA.
