Project Information

Project Title Light and Ghosts

1) Project Mission. Briefly summarize the mission of your art project. What is the fundamental purpose of your project?

2) Project Description. Describe or tell us what your art project is. How does it manifest itself physically? The work Lights and Ghosts is comprised of three different pieces. The work Ghost Screen utilizes programmed LCD lights, treated glass, and touch-screen technology to bring to life a series of animated forms on two screens, which talk to the viewer and interact with each other depending on the characters the viewer selects. The screen also reacts to the movement of pieces of body armor used during the performance piece, kaidankai. The performance consists of two characters (Mari, Japanese and trans) and (Ghost Man, SWM) as they interact through virtual simulation in the cyberspace projected on screens between them. The NEXT COMPONENT is body/chair, an installation piece consisting of a red sculpture with a series of moving images projected onto it. Motion detectors are wired into a computer, which will determine what is projected onto the body/chair. The closer the participant gets to the body/chair the more person-like the body/chair will appear to be. Response limited to 1500 characters?

3) Project Interactivity. In what ways is your art project interactive? Consider the people, the physical environment, and the community as a whole?. Ghost Screen invites participants to touch the screen and explore the dynamic world within the screen. The performance happens within the viewers space and audience members are invited to change the spectral space of the piece through a voting apparatus installed at the end of both screens. In body/chair participants are encouraged to get closer to the body/chair in order to change the images projected onto the chair. Response limited to 1500 characters?

4) Community Interaction. In what ways will your project encourage community outreach? How will your project encourage participating communities to interact with other communities? Lights and Ghosts is a complex piece designed to spark dialogue about the ways in which racial oppression and sexual violence manifest themselves and how communities and individuals can create powerful forces to disrupt problematic representational practices and forms of violence. More specifically with this piece I wanted to force members of the Asian-American community into dialogue about sexuality, gender and violence while engaging with complex issues around race and representation. 5) Collaboration. Define or describe your community. Who will help you create your art project? Is the project collaborative? In what ways? This piece is supported by the Japanese Cultural Center in Hawaii as well as the Wing Luke Asian Museum in Seattle.
