Recently I saw an amazing installation at the San Jose Museum of Art. I instantly fell in love, with the way everyone seemed to be intimately interacting with their own installation, not just one installation that was designed to be multifaceted enough to capture a large audience along the same path. Ingo Gunther' project
World Processor began in 1988. It is a collection of physical globes, containing, representing, and illuminating world statistics, and consequently the meaningful stories that numbers of populations, GNP, death rate, oil supply patterns, education, religion, language tell us. This IS the world as it is, void of spin (no pun intended). Because this project has evolved over two decades, the globes have had many lives, and many manifestations, while the formal aesthetic has maintained a decorum of continuity. I think the work is elegant, brilliant, and timely. This was one of the most engaging installations I have even experienced.
MLA style sheet format) including at least ten sources that you will reference or citeFirst, views towards aging and even what constitutes “old” vary a lot between cultures. Do you have and interest in eventually including a comparative look at this in your project?
Next, using an “Avadon-esque” blank background for your subjects can be very powerful, but including aspects of a subject's environment and cutting in some of these scenes during the time they are talking could add meaningful context. What are your thoughts on these two different approaches relative to what you would like to accomplish?
"How are you going to get young people to answer your questions?"
Answer: Your second question is key to this. First there has to be some interest. I recognize that the interest needs to be built outside of the actual venue (show, or site). This would be in the form of promotion: radio interviews, fliers, newspaper articles, etc. I think if younger people understand that their ideas of "other ages" are not unlike have preconceived and often negative notions of the "other".
"How are you going to get the young people to have any interest in the "old" people to listen to them?"
Answer: As stated above the success of a show like this is going to be directly linked to it's marketing and promotion. In the wonderful play "Avenue Q", the song
"Everyone's Just a Little Bit Racist" sets up this uncomfortable question and then answers it, in a very nonthreatening way. I hope to find a way that is also non threatening while still communicating the message.
