Introduction to 201

This class is building the foundation of key theories needed so that we may discuss and write intelligently what is relevant today in digital art and new media.

We will be learning the jargon and meanings of words used in the articles published around the world. We are learning the language used when critically assessing works of art in digital art and new media.

The class requires attendance, a response journal and a final Paper.

Weekly Deliverables: Response Journal

We are expected to have a 500 typed word Note embodying the synopses and reflections for each reading. This creates our "Response Journal" that contains all the notes of thoughtful contemplations of key points in entirety.

Big Deliverable: Final Paper

We are required to write a FINAL PAPER of 10-12 pages in length that will be presented our final class, week 10, December 5th. The topic is the following:

Is it feasible to use new media art in an interactive exchange without human contact to have a genuine emotional response particularly the "empathy" emotion from a real participant? Also, is it possible with biometric recording devices to detect and collect data regarding the response if it happens? My essay will concern the use of the current gaming and psychological/physical oriented technologies for stimulating the "empathy" emotion. I will research the tools that have been created with this intent in mind, their practice and results, and how these tools can be applied to my project.
