Weeding In: Subproject After identifying a variety of plant species that manage to grow on the soil at Hunters Point, the range of pollutants in the soil, and any other detrimental growing conditions, I propose to designate a series of growing conditions that represent a cross section of the experiences possible for these botanical colonists. After cultivating an individual from each species under each growing condition, we would create the taxonomy of their aesthetic responses to the situation. We would then facilitate their visual narrations by creating a website that would emphasize the space created by the commonalties in their experiences and responses.
To do this we need to be able to test the soil. I’m guessing on the cost of this and hoping that UCSC will have resources to do this in one of the departments.
Heat lights and fans are necessary to duplicate harsh summer growing conditions. Drip system and timer are necessary for rainier seasons. The addition of certain chemicals will be necessary to achieve uniform growing conditions and to isolate exposure to those chemicals.
