Art 80D Due Date: In Section Week of June 6–8

Present Book at Open Studios: June 9

Final Project: Artist’s Book

In this class you’ve been introduced to some of the dominant photographic motifs, as well as being shown work by many of the key photographic practitioners of the past 150 years. Now it is your turn to join in the history of photography by creating some original work for your final project.

Choose a topic, style or narrative that you wish to focus on in depth and with a greater breadth than was available to you on the other course assignments. Like the previous assignments, it is incumbent upon you to clarify what it is that you are trying to address throughout this project, and in what ways you need to create the necessary images to cogently present your ideas to your viewers. Bear in mind that you will be presenting this final project in the form of a book. You will also be evaluated more critically on your choice of images, clarity of idea and in your final presentation.

The key to this project is to focus your attention as precisely as possible, without inhibiting your curiosity and sense of wonder. Be open to improvising off of your original plan if you discover new and exciting directions that might not fit your initial idea. Work as much as you can on this project, but with a clear mind. Sketch out the order of your images and the ways that you might present them. Decide if text will be important, and how you will utilize it.

Explore something you know well, or something that you want to know more about. Remember that photographs are visual representations of ideas and emotions. Photographs can illustrate facts, or create fictions. Be bold or be subtle. Whatever your style and intent, be sure that it fits your chosen goals. Have fun with this project and be excited to share it with the class!

Your Final Project will be presented as an “artist’s book,” and should include as many images as you deem necessary, but no fewer than 10, and you should shoot at least 2-3 rolls of film. You may shoot color print or B/W print film, or you may continue to shoot slides if you plan on being able to output them some how. You may also shoot digitally if you have experience printing from your camera. There are two slide scanners and a color printer at the Porter lab that you may decide to use if you want to output prints from your slides. Be prepared to present & discuss your project in section. Finally, you are required to present your project during Open Studios, June 9th, 11am-4pm, in the Photography building (where you have section) at Baskin Arts.

You may expand on a previous assignment, but may not count previously shot rolls of film for this assignment. This is your opportunity to explore what you’ve learned in this course and what areas of photographic work most interests you. Keep in mind that the overall quality, sophistication and resolution of this project will weigh heavily in determining your overall final grade in this course.
