* "noetic" refers to the intentional act of consciousness--noesis (believing, willing and loving...)
* the phenomena at which it is directed is the noemata
* "noematic" refers to the object or content--noema-- which appears in the noetic acts (respectively the believed, wanted and loved ...)
Meditation on My Predominant Form of Musical Expression-- Live Performance of the Looped Sample
Two types of change that articulate my expression of music are that of the change of shape of a sampled sound source mediated through the duration of a live performance of it. Let us begin with the
original sample. It helps to think of the raw audio sample at this point as having the shape of a straight line. Visualize taking a snippet out of a cassette tape. Now think of the snippet being taped together at both ends-- forming a "loop". Now extend this conceptualization of the loop to include a string of data that has been treated in the same manner. This is what is called looping a sample. That sample can then placed into an electronic effect such as delay, changing the shape once again, in an additive manner, thereby taking on the shape of the effect it is processed through as well.
In my musical practice, I like to manipulate the waveform's shape further by manually adjusting certain parameters of the delay, such as the amount of delay that is applied to the sound (commonly referred to as "delay time" which can be measured in both milliseconds and/or various subdivisions of whole notes), as well as the overall mixture between the original sound loop and the effected sound loop. Using this idea of a sample having a shape that can be changed as our starting point, we can then consider the process/act of the sample's shape changing over a particular duration of time (understood here as another manifestation of change of time in a different sense than that of manipulating the "delay time") as a performance of it --what is thought of by me as "playing the loop". That change of shape over change of time can be viewed as a musical performance.
We can observe the piece as a vector between the sample's shape change and the duration it is played ... a kind of free improvisation of shape manipulation over time...
