Who are your target audience and how do you define them-age group, ethic, race, geographical location, cultures?

My target audience would include anyone in a position of privilege. This would include anyone that occupies a role in the dynamics of exclusion. Associations are often made between privilege/exclusion and categories of age, race, geographical location, or cultural classification. This work would dismantle the misconception that these classifications are binaries. Therefore, it would be counter to my goal to specifically target any single group.

What do you attempt to achieve by juxtaposing cultures and why juxtaposition method?

Again, this work dismantles the misconception that cultural classifications are binary. The juxtaposition of conflicting images creates a specific tension. It is this tension that will serve to highlight similarity and difference between subjects.

Have you thought about ways that your projected subjects might surprise you? Are you willing to relinquish your authorship if your projected subjects decide to use your device in unpredictable ways?

The subjects of this piece - as well as the images they produce – might produce unexpected outcomes; this is something as an artist you try to imagine. What I have come up with is that the nature of these “surprises”, are unpredictable. That is the beauty that surfaces within a work of art. I am not sure that it would be necessary to “relinquish authorship” in the case of my work, as I am only author in terms of conception – whatever results that occur from this work are the product of an idea set into motion. This idea facilitates the interaction of subject and device. It is true, the artist frames these images, but this framing is entirely dependant on the results of the interaction.

It is assumed that the candid interaction with the device will create unique imagery directly related to the subject. This could manifest in a “hamming up”. Whatever expression is captured - between subject and device - it is assumed that is unique.

I conflate any “props” brought by participants as an element of the subject; I don’t see either as exclusive.

The element of this project that runs analogous to the purikura booths (i.e. tweaking), lie in the post capturing representation of the imagery. Through decisions of contextualization, arrangement, and presentation the artist’s hand - is informed by and also - structures the imagery.

Key to this work is the fact that this device is not simply a digital camera. The booth creates a space isolated from the complications of the photographer subject interaction. Making it possible to capture simplified candid interaction between subject and device. This space of isolation is predetermined by design. Accentuation of this space is inherent in its creation.

How do you envision the final presentation of the project?

I see three modes of presentation:

  1. Exhibition of images in a gallery
  2. Online presentation of project
  3. Postcard of images and abstract of project
